Hardscape is where the upper soil profile is no longer exposed to the actual surface of the Earth. This form of landscaping is epecially used in areas with little or no soil.

Typical small-scale hardscaping examples include patios and Gazebos. Retaining walls are often used to create boundaries between hardscapes and earth landscaping features, or softscapes.

From a planning perspective, hardscapes can include very large features, such as paved areas and raised garden beds. Most artificial water features are technically hardscapes because they require a barrier to retain the water, instead of letting it drain into the surrounding soil.

From an aesthetic perspective, hardscaping allows PLANTspec to erect landscaping features that would otherwise be impossible due to soil erosion or lack of soil.

Hardscape is made up of hard wearing materials such as stone, concrete and other construction materials, as opposed to soft landscaping which is grass, bark and other such items.
